The Origin & Art of Afternoon Tea

The taking of a proper afternoon tea began in around 1840 when Anna the Duchess of Bedford discovered a sinking feeling around 4pm.
For me, it began at age 15 at the Drake hotel in Chicago, and at 4 years old for Lexie, when I decided to introduce her to the civilized tradition of taking tea.
This tradition, and love to us, has continued through time.
Sometimes being served and mostly serving others, little did Anna know that her partaking in bread, butter, cakes, and tea, would become a unique experience, and shared for special occasions, becoming a bit more elaborate in current day.
Afternoon Tea & High Tea are not one in the same, which often leads to events being misnamed today. Particularly here in the U.S.
Afternoon tea is traditionally served between the hours of 3PM-4PM, as just a small snack of finger sandwiches, scones & sweets meant to hold you over until dinner.
High tea, however, is served in the evening, around 5PM, historically meant to nourish workers when they returned home after a strenuous day. It consists of heartier fare such as meat, fish & vegetables.
To date, we have taken tea anywhere from England to New York, Florence to Chicago, Switzerland to Charleston, right here in our own state of Maryland, and more, as we curate our own tea service for your occasions!
This tradition is cherished by our family and we plan to pass it down to generations to come as we explore more incredible tea taking locations in the future.
Stay tuned as we review our tea experiences & reveal afternoon tea tips & tricks coming soon...
Building a Proper Tiered Tray
Beginning with the bottom tier, add your savory tea sandwiches in a variety of flavors & shapes.
Moving up to the second tier, enjoy your homemade scones with cream & jam. An afternoon tea essential.
On the top & final tier, indulge in your sweets course. From tea cakes & tarts, to  cookies & petite pastries, you will finish your afternoon tea properly.
